Council of Long Beach Organizations
The Council of Long Beach Organizations announced the election of Marilyn Russel Bittle as its new chairwoman for 1988-89.
Bittle is the executive director of the Teachers Assn. of Long Beach, the union representing teachers in the Long Beach Unified School District. She replaces Robert Kramme, past president of Lambda Democratic Club, a political organization composed of mostly homosexual members.
The council has 15 affiliates, which are mostly liberal organizations and a couple of unions. Their members include the City Employees Assn., the National Organization for Women and the Long Beach Area Citizens Involved activist group.[4]
Helping the homeless
In December 1990, the Long Beach Housing Action Association, a tenants-rights advocacy group, and the Long Beach Area Citizens Involved, a liberal watchdog group, distributed athletic jackets to the homeless who gathered at Lincoln Park in downtown.
"They don't have much of anything, and it's cold out there," said Marshall Blesofsky, one of the organizers. The jackets were donated by a sporting goods store.
The vegetarian meals have been served for the past year at the park near City Hall by Food Not Bombs, an organization consisting mostly of college students. Last Sunday, the group also handed out vitamins donated by health food stores, said Pam Miera, a member of the organization.[5]
