From a March 6, 2019 by DSA National Electoral Committee statement "DSA Elected Officials Support Teacher Power and Working People Everywhere."

Endorsing Democratic Socialists of America members included Justin Cummings, Vice mayor of Santa Cruz.

Standing for AD 29

In 2019 Justin Cummings stood from AD 29 for the California Democratic Party Central Committee.

In order for our society to shift to become more progressive, diverse, and inclusive we need to elect officials who share these values and will commit to representing the many and not just the few. We need to select officials who will help stabilize communities, make health care and education accessible to all, confront climate change head on and respect the integrity of the scientific method, and provide safety for the marginalized and disenfranchised people of our nation and our world. Having grown up in a lower middle class family on the south side of Chicago, and currently as a young working professional who struggles under our current economic structure, I understand the needs and concerns of the average citizen and would like to be a delegate for the democratic party’s 29th assembly district to represent the needs of the many. As a recently elected city council member to the city of Santa Cruz, scientist, and environmental educator, I feel that I would be able to nominate representatives who would reflect the values of our community and work towards protecting our climate, nation, and the people who reside within it[1]

In 2018 Democratic Socialists of America Santa Cruz endorsed Justin Cummings for Santa Cruz City Council.

Socialist help

In 2015 when Bernie ran for president he made repeated calls to get involved. Chris Krohn got involved.

He ran for city council with Sandy Brown, Drew Glover and Steve Schnaar. They called it the Brand New Council. We were supported by SC4Bernie and we ran to reflect the goals and values of SC4Bernie.

In 2018, Krohn worked to get a couple more Bernie candidates elected to the Santa Cruz city council, Drew Glover and Justin Cummings...and we had a brief majority on the SC city council. Besides getting that majority back in 2022, I would like to advance the Bernie movement platform.[2]
