Asian Americans for Equality celebrated their 40th Anniversary Gala, November 18, 2014, at Tribeca 360, 10 Debrosses St NYC.
Honored "Agents of Change" included Jian Liu;[1]
- Jian Liu immigrated to New York in April 2005 speaking only basic English. While he was a student at Lower East Side Preparatory High School, Mr. Liu grew to become a student leader at the Coalition for Asian American Children & Families. His senior year of high school was a memorable year as he graduated valedictorian and served as President of the Student Government as well as receiving the 2007 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Leadership Award from former Comptroller John Liu. The Following year, Jian Liu was recognized by Comptroller Scott Stringer for his volunteer and leadership work in under-served areas of the city by awarding him a Civic Leaders of Tomorrow Public Policy Fellowship. Mr. Liu began his college studies at City College of New York and in 2011, he received his B.A. in pure mathematics with a minor in physics and secondary math education. Shortly after, in 2012, he received his M.A. in Teachers of Mathematics 7-12 from Steinhardt, NYU. Jian Liu continues his leadership work while teaching 9th grade algebra classes at Clara Barton High School in Brooklyn while at the same time persueing his second Masters Degree in Science in Education and a major in Bilingual Childhood Education at The City College of New York.
