In early 1993, Hillary was appointed chair of the Task Force on National Health Care Reform. The primary purpose of this reform was to institute a universal healthcare plan in America that would insure every American against catastrophic illness and guarantee adequate, paid lifelong medical care.[1]
Timeline
- House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt urged Hillary to include the health care plan in the national budget proposal. Hillary agreed but Bill was at first hesitant.[2]
- On March 10, 1993, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ruled that Hillary was to be treated like an outsider regarding healthcare meetings, and thus all meetings would be open to the public when gathering facts.[3]
- Gephardt and George Mitchell warned Hillary and Bill that it would be impossible to pass a budget and healthcare reform prior to the 1994 elections. The Clintons ignored the advice.[4]
- A court ordered that the White House release the names of all 511 federal employees, congressional aides, and outside consultants who worked on the health care task force.[5]
