Palestine rally
On Saturday, June 29, 2024, nearly 100 community members gathered in Lafayette Square to show support for Palestine, and to put pressure on local lawmakers to pass a ceasefire resolution.
Devin Davis, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress, led the crowd in chants of “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” He spoke in condemnation of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which funds his opponent.
Organizers also condemned political repression against their efforts.
“Every time the people of this country stand up against the ruling class and its various atrocities, they are met with brutal force,” said Shreyas Vasudevan, a local organizer with NOSHIP and an arrested participant in the student encampment at Tulane University. “We refuse to be intimidated. We will never apologize for standing in solidarity with Palestine, and will fight every bogus charge they lay on us.”
Toni Dupelchain-Jones, a local organizer with New Orleans for Community Oversight of Police (NOCOP), was arrested in March for protesting next to Tulane’s campus. That same month, NOCOP member Felix Allen was arrested for giving public comment at the Port of New Orleans board of commissioners monthly meetings in opposition to the Port’s Innovation Embassy with Israel.
The rally was planned as a march from Lafayette Square to City Hall, with Congresswoman Cori Bush – author of the Ceasefire Now Resolution – as one of the speakers. Unfortunately, due to a death in the family, Congresswoman Bush had to postpone the visit.
Lead organizations included Masjid Omar, Palestinian Youth Movement, and AMAANA, a local Palestinian-led care group for people living with disabilities. New Orleans Stop Helping Israel’s Ports (NOSHIP), Jewish Voices for Peace (JVP), and Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) also helped organize the rally.[1]
Resolution to Endorse Devin Davis
Resolution to Endorse Devin Davis for Louisiana Congressional District 2
Submitted by: Bob M. and Jack Reno Sweeney.
Whereas, Troy Carter has taken money from fossil fuel companies and continues to neglect his constituency in Cancer Alley, while his ongoing support from zionist advocacy groups has influenced his contribution to the martyrdom of too many Palestinians, and
Whereas, Devin Davis, a member of DSA and VOTE, has unabashedly supported the Palestinian cause and BDS and can finally put a member in Congress representing the poor and working people of Louisiana, and
Whereas, the National Electoral Commission recommends chapters “should focus on races that target the worst incumbents against whom a clear contrast can be made”, “Chapters should consider both experienced DSA core organizers and other working-class organizers with an existing base of support”, and “Make efforts to recruit and support Black and socialists of color candidates for office”; therefore
Be it resolved that the New Orleans DSA chapter endorses Devin Davis for Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District, and
Be it further resolved that the Endorsement Campaign Group will be created immediately upon passage, expiring no later than November 30, 2024, and
Be it further resolved that the Endorsement Campaign Group will coordinate members to volunteer for Devin Davis’ campaign, seek out national DSA endorsement, and if possible, register voters in CD2, and
Be it further resolved that the Local Council “will communicate endorsed candidate expectations directly to the candidate at the outset of the endorsement process” when this resolution receives 10 signatures.
