Susan Wild connection?

The Lehigh Valley hasn’t fielded any DSA contenders this cycle. But in the 7th Congressional District, the state GOP has sought to tie Democrat Susan Wild to the DSA wave by highlighting a local progressive group that at one point erroneously listed the DSA among its members.

Those involved with the Lehigh Valley Democratic Progressive Coalition — which hosted a recent fundraiser for Democratic candidates — and the newly formed Democratic Socialists of America of Lehigh Valley chapter say there’s no formal affiliation between the two groups at this point.

Some DSA members have been working individually on campaigns, but the chapter is still deciding how exactly it will be involved with local candidates, said Dan Friedman, who is on the local DSA group’s organizing committee.

So far, about 30 people have been attending meetings, with closer to 200 active on social media, with the recent primary wins and GOP backlash both appearing to spur interest.

“It’s very clear that the DSA movement is being targeted as something to scare people,” Friedman said. “But right now, being outside the mainstream is probably a good thing.”[2]

Democratic Socialists of America of Lehigh Valley April 18 2019·

This week, we issued our first political endorsements for candidates seeking municipal office this year.

These were people who answered a questionnaire and then met with us for a Q&A and whose beliefs and goals for their time in office align with ours.

  • We are endorsing Jim Moreno, who is running against Jim Martin for Lehigh County District Attorney.
  • We endorse Marisa Ziegler, who is seeking a seat on the Parkland School Board.
  • Lastly, in the race for mayor or Easton, we recommend Taiba Sultana. By recommend, we mean that we see our values as being in alignment but can't at this time commit resources to the race

We wish these candidates luck at the polls and invite our members to help in any way we can. We'll let you know about volunteering opportunities as they come along.
