Voting "rights" rally

A crowd of people rallied with signs at a major Mt. Lebanon intersection July 10 2021 afternoon in support of the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, two federal bills blocked by Republicans in the U.S. Senate. Parallel rallies were held in Wexford and Forest Hills.

"We're in a very fragile moment for our Democracy. Voting rights are under attack. Laws are being passed based on lies. And right now there's an opportunity for a very important bill to get passed in Congress. It's already passed in the House," said Mykie Reidy, of Partners for Progress, a spokesperson for the rally. "Now it needs to pass the Senate because of the foundation of our Democracy is the ability of every citizen to have a voice."

Backers say the legislation would protect voting rights in the face of restrictive voting laws being passed by state legislatures and adverse court rulings. Congressman Conor Lamb (D), 17th District, joined those rallying at the corner of Washington and Cochran Roads in Mt. Lebanon.

"What needs to happen is, we need to get back to a system in this country where every single person's right to vote is honored," Lamb said.. "And that's all we're trying to do: we don't want to have gerrymandering, we don't want to have too much money in politics, all the rest of it. And that's what these laws are about. We're just trying to protect people's right to vote.[2]

More than a year ago, we set out to oust a seemingly invulnerable congressman and put a Democrat in his seat. We shone a light on Tim Murphy and made it impossible for the community and the press to continue to ignore his years long crusade of meanness and hypocrisy. The journey we went on together ended up having a few unexpected turns, but now our hard work came to fruition. As Conor Lamb himself said when claiming victory, he couldn’t have done it without us.
