Kent State remembrance
May 4, 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the tragic Kent State shootings which claimed the lives of four students. In remembrance of this history, Kent State Students for a Democratic Society invited students, staff, and community members to join the panel of former and current student-activists to discuss the dynamics of campus activism and student mobilization, and the factors shaping the culture of activism and dissent in higher education spaces.
The panel will be moderated by Professor Idris Kabir Syed, and will consist of former SDS activists Candy Knox and Colin Neiberger as well as current student activists Colt Hutchinson, Patrick Ferguson, and Tayjua Hines.[1]
Weatherman
In the late 1960s Colin Neiberger held a national leadership position in the Weathermen faction of Students for a Democratic Society[2].
Columbus Free Press arrests
Four members of the editorial staff of the Columbus Free Press were jailed on May 18, 1972. They were arrested by the Columbus Police “Red Squad.” Margaret Sarber, John Neikirk, Steve Abbott and Colin Neiberger were held on bail as high as $150,000 as enemies of the state[3].
- Back then, there was a real clash of cultures: a peace-oriented social justice culture vs. a violent military industrial complex.
