Frederick received his Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Iowa. He received his Master's degree in Journalism from the University of North Carolina. He holds a Doctorate in Communication from the University of Colorado .
At the University of North Carolina, Frederick worked as a columnist and editor for The Daily Tar Heel before becoming the paper's ombudsman. Frederick has previously worked as a consultant for the Associated Press and the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. He was the Deputy Editorial and Research Director at Media Matters for America and he was the Advance at John Edwards for President.
