Standing for AD 78
In 2019 Bernadette Butkiewicz stood from AD 78 for the California Democratic Party Central Committee.
My name is Bernadette Butkiewicz and I’m a young progressive activist who fights to empower people to use their voice, their vote, and their civil liberties to increase voter engagement. As a native San Diegan and a local organizer, I am dedicated to the betterment of my community.
Serving on the Bond Oversight Committee for San Diego Unified School District Prop S and Z funds for the past two years, I’ve overseen San Diego Unified school districts spending on our future generations. As an alumna of San Diego Unified, I’ve seen our campuses improve and transform to implement new vocational learning spaces and teaching career-based learning skills that have improved career readiness and pride in student work.
My efforts as an Organizer within the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #230 are focused towards recruitment and retention of women in the trade. Establishing the Sisters in Solidarity program three years ago, we’ve managed to create a mentor program to increase retention which has overall doubled the number of women in the pipe trades union today. Dedicated to the improvement of equality for all women I founded and was elected as President by my peers to the Coalition of Labor Union Women San Diego Chapter, our chapter goals of empowering all women in their workplace and at home has bolstered much support among local elected officials. My hard work and coalition building with local elected officials was recognized by my Assembly member Todd Gloria when I earned the ‘2018 Women of the Year Award- Assembly District 78. He recognized me for not only organizing within my trade but also my community.
I am currently proudly serving as a Board Member of the San Diego Labor Democratic Club, an alternate to our local Democratic Central Committee, and a former Membership Director to San Diego County Young Democrats. I am dedicated to getting young people involved in our process for they are our future. [1]
