Activism

John has authored or edited several books and numerous articles. Most recently, he has been a Writing Fellow at Provisions Library in Washington, DC and a PanTech fellow in Korean Studies at Stanford University. He is a former associate editor of World Policy Journal. He has worked as an international affairs representativein Eastern Europe and East Asia for the American Friends Service Committee. He has also worked for the AFSC on such issues as the global economy, gun control, women and workplace, and domestic politics. He has served as a consultant for the Friends Committee on National Legislation, among other organizations.

North Korea

In one of the great ironies of my work on North Korea, when I was actually visiting the country between 1998 and 2001, I couldn’t write about what I saw or the discussions I had there. Only when I was no longer engaged in citizen diplomacy — and only when I no longer had direct access to “facts on the ground” — could I write to my heart’s content.

During a seminar held by the Asia Institute and Foreign Policy in Focus in Washington, D.C. on March 25 2014, titled “Re-Balancing In East Asia: Could 100-year Time Frame Under-gird U.S. Engagement,” during a panel discussion titled “How can the United States engage constructively with the countries of East Asia?”] John Feffer, co-director of Foreign Policy in Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies and senior associate of the Asia Institute, concluded the seminar with the observation that President Ronald Reagan had once said that only a common enemy, like Martians invading the Earth, would bring the nations of the world together to work in peace for a common goal. “Now,” he concluded, “we do not need to look for some extraterrestrial invader to provide us with a common enemy. It is right here amongst us on Earth. It is climate change.”
