Education and world view

B.A. University of Wisconsin M.A. University of Wisconsin

As an undergraduate at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) Synowicz majored in biochemistry. At Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI) he continued his scientific studies by taking graduate courses in neurophysiology. He later went to philosophy school, getting a B.A. and then a M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.[2]

My fascination at the time was in the area of the philosophy of logic and mathematics. Since that time my interests have shifted toward social/political philosophy, as I have been painfully made aware of the obvious fact that policies humans come up with to manage and control people, can cause a great deal of suffering.

Career

Synowicz was a medic in the U.S. Air Force, worked in the veterinary medical field (at a Humane Society) and in law enforcement (as a Humane Officer); he owned a manufacturing business in Detroit, canvassed for two non-profit organizations on social issues, and has taught philosophy for over a decade at six different institutions.[3]

Activism/writing

Michael Synowicz serves on the board of directors at People's Books Co-op in Milwaukee, where he also volunteers. He worked as an activist for two organizations in Wisconsin, Citizen Action of Wisconsin and Working America. At the Citizen Action he canvassed for universal health care; at Working America (an affiliate of the AFL-CIO) he canvassed to get Barack Obama elected. He has written three novels with a philosophical bent and a number of philosophical pieces. He is currently working on a book entitled "We the Milwaukee Progressives," where he is profiling a number of Milwaukee's unsung heroes in the progressive movement. He also served as a board member of a free health clinic, the Bread of Healing Clinic, where he wrote patient stories for their website.[4]
