The Council for a Livable World, founded in 1962 by long-time socialist activist and alleged Soviet agent, Leo Szilard, is a non-profit advocacy organization that seeks to "reduce the danger of nuclear weapons and increase national security", primarily through supporting progressive, congressional candidates who support their policies. The Council supported Ann McLane Kuster (D-NH) in her 2010 Congressional election campaign.

The Council said of Kuster;

Kuster is a community activist who has spent years tirelessly advocating for public access to healthcare and higher education. She has also worked hard to promote peace and human rights, vocally opposing the Iraq war before it began.

Kuster publicly disagreed with President Obama’s decision to escalate the U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan:

“While I am pleased that the President has decided to set a timetable for drawing down our troops in Afghanistan, I do not agree with the decision to first send 30,000 additional troops. It is not clear that sending more combat troops is the best way to meet the real threat, as Al Qaeda disperses to Pakistan and other countries. This is particularly important as our military has been strained by six years of fighting in Iraq and eight years of fighting in Afghanistan. I believe we need better cooperation and accountability from the Afghani government and we must demand a commitment from them to root out corruption. Instead of more troops, we should be sending more trainers to help the Afghan military provide better security for its citizens.”

2016 support

Ann McLane Kuster was supported by Council for a Livable World again in 2016.

Annie got her first take in politics at 16 when she volunteered for the presidential campaign of Rep. Pete McKloskey, who ran on an anti-Vietnam war platform. Annie graduated from Dartmouth College in 1978 and from Georgetown University Law Center in 1984. Before her election to Congress in 2012, Annie served as an adoption lawyer, an advocate for public healthcare access and higher education, and a Democratic Party activist.

Annie voted for the vitally important Iran nuclear agreement, a diplomatic triumph that holds great promise for the United States. She endorses reducing the U.S. nuclear weapons budget because the U.S. has more than enough nuclear weapons and supports the Kissinger-Schulz-Nunn-Perry vision of moving responsibly toward a world free of nuclear weapons. She would withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan as quickly as possible.

Annie Kuster is a three-term House Member from New Hampshire who has thrived in the turbulent New Hampshire political scene that often tick-tocks between the two major parties. In this swing district, the NRCC is vowing to take the seat back. Lynne Blankenbeker, a U.S. Navy Captain and former state representative, is running against her, as well as two other candidates.

Peace Action connection

Judith LeBlanc, Peace Action field organizer was involved in the Raul Grijalva campaign in Arizona.

Hours remain until the polls open and Peace Action’s organizers, members and volunteers are knocking on doors, making phone calls and doing last-minute campaign work for peace-minded Congressional candidates across the country. In the past week, however, Peace Action has drawn critical attention and much needed resources to five candidates running in close Congressional and Senate races in Arizona, New Hampshire, California, Washington and North Carolina. These candidates, whom Peace Action endorsed, are Suzan DelBene (D) in Washington’s 8th Congressional District; incumbent Raul Grijalva (D-Az. Dist.7); North Carolina’s Democratic Senatorial candidate Elaine Marshall; Ann McLane Kuster (D) running to represent New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional district; and Steve Pougnet (D) running for California’s 45th District.

As Judith LeBlanc, Peace Action field organizer, wrote last week from the Grijalva campaign in Arizona, losing peace-minded candidates like Grijalva will be a setback not only for the country but also for the peace movement. But as a feminist activist and scholar working on peace issues, I argue that losing any of these five candidates will be a further blow to the peace movement and the feminist women’s movement in the U.S. Aside from the fact that three of these Peace Action-endorsed candidates are women, all of them support feminist issues of pay equity, improved health care access for women, reducing unintended pregnancies and protecting abortion rights. DelBene, Marshall and Kuster also support an end to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a policy that disproportionally affects female soldiers in our military. In 2008, The New York Times reported that 46 percent of Army soldiers discharged under this policy in 2007 were women, although women make up 14 percent of Army personnel. Although many feminists vigorously debate the issue of women in the military, the high number of women discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation deserves swift attention and action.

As Representative of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, Grijalva co-sponsored the Security and Financial Empowerment (SAFE) Act to promote the economic security and safety of victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Violence against women within our own borders is a huge problem that is ignored in our national consciousness and often portrayed as something that happens to other women in war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, 1 in 6 American women will be a victim of sexual assault, according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).

The Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA) announced its endorsement of Congresswoman Annie Kuster for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives this November. The endorsement was made at the Senior Activity Center in Nashua, September 12, 2014.

“I’m so pleased to receive the endorsement of the Alliance for Retired Americans, an organization that is looking out for the best interests of Granite State seniors,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “Since day one in office, I pledged to always stand up for the programs our seniors rely on, like Medicare and Social Security, and I’ll will never stop fighting against the reckless cuts proposed by extreme Tea Party candidates like my opponent. Our seniors have paid into these programs their whole lives, and we must protect the benefits they’ve earned and deserve.”

The Alliance for Retired Americans has endorsed Congresswoman Kuster because of her commitment to improving the lives of Granite State seniors. She has a clear record of standing up for seniors in the state, and she’s worked to protect Medicare and Social Security from harmful cuts. She also recently helped introduce the Social Security Caregiver Credit Act, which would help ease the financial burden on individuals who are serving as caregivers for their elderly relatives more than 80 hours per month.

We have the momentum to make a Green New Deal real, but we need a critical mass of Congresspeople to support the proposal.

We sat down with staff from the offices of both Senator Shaheen & Senator Hassan this week to discuss the Sanders Medicare for All Act of 2019.

Sen Shaheen has not ruled out cosponsoring in this session, but both Senators and their staff want more phones calls.

We've been so busy turning out hundreds of calls and letters a month to Rep Chris Pappas and Rep Ann McLane Kuster that we overlooked our colleagues in the Senate. Let's get those phones ringing!
