Ecosocialist Working Group run

In 2019 Alex Telecky ran for Democratic Socialists of America - North Texas Ecosocialist Working Group Lead.

I’ve been organizing with different socialist and environmental groups in the DFW area since the 2014 Denton referendum on fracking. I did graphic design work, canvassing, poll greeting, and planning for Gary Stuard’s 2015 Green Party campaign against Pete Sessions. In 2017 with comrades from DSA and Solidarity I helped start NTX Transit Riders in response to a threatened fare hike on DART. We fought for almost a year against the fare hike, pushed it back by 8 months and took out some of the steepest proposed increases, before the fare hike finally passed by only a single vote. We went on to campaign for and win improved amenities on DART and a low income fare. We built a strong relationship with local ATU 1338 representing DART operators and campaigned with them against the further privatization of DART paratransit. Since joining DSA a year ago I’ve served as one of the DSA NTX Ecosocialist WG leads since summer 2019. I would like to see Ecosoc keep working on NTX Transit Riders and Highland Hills CAC and build them up as independent organizations of the working class, as well as recruit new members to DSA through these campaigns. I want to do more internal organizing and political education in Ecosoc to develop all members’ confidence, thoughtfulness, and capacity to lead, and increase democratic participation in strategizing and decision making. And I would like us to keep developing our Peoples Climate Plan and organize new campaigns based on that plan, including energy democracy/a municipal takeover of Oncor and Atmos.
I joined the DSA a little over a year ago, and have been filling in as one of the co-leads of the DSA NTX ecosocialist working group since the summer of 2019. During that time we’ve been working on two “base building” projects: the NTX Transit Riders and the Highland Hills CAC, as well as developing a People’s Climate Plan for Dallas to guide our future organizing. I’ve also been helping to organize the Collin County DSA, helping develop a Collin DSA Housing working group, and helping organize Collin’s response to a recent fascist convergence in McKinney. Ecosoc and Collin DSA have been my main DSA responsibilities, but I also have helped out with other working groups’ canvassing, text banking, or the chapter’s tabling events and mass mobilizations as I can.[2]
