Daniel Ellsberg first met Howard Zinn at Faneuil Hall in Boston in early 1971, where they both spoke against the indictments of Eqbal Ahmad and Philip Berrigan for “conspiring to kidnap Henry Kissinger.” They marched with the rest of the crowd to make citizens’ arrests at the Boston office of the FBI. Later that spring, they went with their affinity group (including Noam Chomsky, Cindy Fredericks, Marilyn Young, Mark Ptashne, Zelda Gamson, Fred Branfman and Mitch Goodman), to the May Day actions blocking traffic in Washington[1].

Pentagon Papers

While defending himself against government charges over the leaked Pentagon papers, Daniel Ellsberg followed the recommendation of the Institute for Policy Studies and others, and hired communist lawyer Leonard Boudin as his legal counsel. Boudin's advice was that Ellsberg's best defense would be through the legislative immunity of a congressman disclosing the papers. IPS felt that Mike Gravel of Alaska was a likely candidate, for he was a co-sponsor of the McGovern - Hatfield "end the war" amendment.

Ellsberg contacted then Senator Gravel and offered him the papers for the anti-draft filibuster he planned for June 30, 1971.[2]

On the night of June 29, 1971, Senator Gravel, as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Buildings and Grounds of the Senate Public Works Committee, convened a meeting of the subcommittee and there read extensively from a copy of the Pentagon Papers. He then placed the entire 47 volumes of the study in the public record. IPS fellow Leonard Rodberg had been added to the Senator's staff earlier in the day and assisted Gravel in preparing for and conducting the hearing.3 Some weeks later there were press reports that Gravel had arranged for the papers to be published by Beacon.[3].

Gravel had contacted Roberg through journalist and IPS associate Paul Jacobs.[4].

Sheinbaum connection

Betty Sheinbaum and Stanley Sheinbaum are as close as the progressive Westside comes to a first couple. (She’s Jack Warner’s daughter, and he’s a former economics professor turned anti-Vietnam War and civil liberties activist.) Their light-filled Brentwood Park living room has hosted generations of liberal Democratic politicians and progressive foreign leaders. Daniel Ellsberg’s defense in the Pentagon Papers case was planned there.[5]

Opposing loans to Chile

In 1987, Joanne Landy, Thomas Harrison and Gail Daneker, Directors, Campaign for Peace and Democracy/East and West, New York, circulated a statement Against Loans to Chile calling upon the Reagan Administration to oppose all loans to Chile.

It has been signed by leading "peace, labor, human rights, religious and cultural figures from the United States, Western Europe and Latin America." They were "joined by a large number of activists and writers from the USSR and Eastern Europe, many of whom have been persecuted in their own countries for work in independent peace and human rights movements."

Daniel Ellsberg endorsed the call.

The majority of signatories were affiliated with Democratic Socialists of America.[7]

1987 Rainbow conference/Board

At the 1987 National Rainbow convention in Raleigh North Carolina, a new board was elected, which included Daniel Ellsberg.

911 "Truther"

Daniel Ellsberg was one of 100 "prominent Americans" who signed an October 26 2004 statement[8]circulated by 911Truth.org calling on the U.S. Government to investigate 9/11 as a possible "inside job".

In 2006 Daniel Ellsberg a Former Military Analyst/Pentagon Papers was a National & State and a Peace & Social Justice Community endorser of Marcy Winograd of the Los Angeles Progressive Democrats of America in her unsuccessful primary bid for the Democratic Party nomination 26th Congressional District in California[9]

Open Letter to Obama on Iran

In 2008 Daniel Ellsberg of Truth-telling Project, Kensington, CA signed an online petition “A Open Letter to Barack Obama on Iran”.[10]

Progressives for Obama

In 2009 Daniel Ellsberg was listed as a signer of the Progressives for Obama website.[11]

Campaign for Peace and Democracy

Ellsberg is listed as an endorser of the Campaign for Peace and Democracy, as of March 15, 2010.[12]
