Woods Fund of Chicago
The Woods Fund of Chicago is an outgrowth of the Woods Charitable Fund which was established in 1941. It is a private philanthropic foundation that makes grants in metropolitan Chicago, Illinois. It was incorporated in Illinois on November 16, 1993, as a nonprofit corporation and began operation in January 1994 when it received funding from a division of the assets of the Woods Charitable Fund.[1]
Mission
The stated mission of the Woods Fund is:
- "Woods Fund of Chicago is a grantmaking foundation whose goal is to increase opportunities for less advantaged people and communities in the metropolitan area, including the opportunity to shape decisions affecting them. The foundation works primarily as a funding partner with nonprofit organizations. Woods supports nonprofits in their important roles of engaging people in civic life, addressing the causes of poverty and other challenges facing the region, promoting more effective public policies, reducing racism and other barriers to equal opportunity, and building a sense of community and common ground."[2]
History
The Woods Fund of Chicago formed out of the Woods Charitable Fund, a foundation that formerly had offices and made grants in both Chicago, Illinois and Lincoln, Nebraska and that now operates only in Nebraska. Woods Charitable Fund was established in 1941 with gifts from Frank H. Woods (1868 - 1952), his wife, Nelle Cochrane Woods (1870 - 1950), and their three sons, Thomas C. Woods (1895 - 1958), Henry C. Woods (1895 - 1968) and Frank H. Woods Jr. (1905 - 1980).[1][3]
