Oakland High

In 2003, Tashia Holloman, 18, an Oakland High senior on her way to Long Beach State University , says "she works part time as a customer service representative in Pleasanton, but her real passion has been being a student leader. She and her classmates have talked about the war, but their biggest worries are how to pay for college, where to find jobs or how to stay busy without getting into trouble."

"The message (poor) people get is that we're dumb and not worth money or attention. They say Oakland kids are not civilized, but they take privileges away from us and there's nothing we can really do but act stupid," Holloman said. "You can't get off the streets selling drugs if you can't make a living."[1]
