Sheila D. Collins

Sheila D. Collins was the author of "A Different Heaven and Earth: A Feminist Perspective on Religion", and was director of UMVS, the Office of Voluntary Services in the national mission arm of the United Methodist Church. She has taught at New York Theological Seminary, Pacific School of Religion and Union Theological Seminary and serves on the executive committee of the Theology in the Americas. She was married to the Rev. John A. Collins.[1]

In 1982 Sheila Collins served on the National Coordinating Committee of a Communist Party USA front the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, which was led by leading Party members Angela Davis and Charlene Mitchell.

Peoples Alliance Founding Conference Sponsors

The names of a few people who sponsored the "National Strategy Meeting", Nov. 9-11, 1979 that created the Peoples Alliance were listed in the October 5, 1979, Vol. XII, #20 issue of Information Digest in a brief blurb style article "Peoples Alliance".

Named sponsors included Sheila Collins, - Methodist Federation for Social Action. Collins attended the conference.

People's Institute for Survival and Beyond

By the late 1970’s, The People’s Institute founders were meeting more and more often with the support of UMVS (thanks especially to the work of Sheila Collins as the Director of UMVS and under the auspices of the Southern Organizing Committee (SOC) based at that time in Birmingham, AL, and under the leadership of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth (thanks especially to the work of Anne Braden and Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian).

1993 NCIPA National Steering Committee

As of Spring 1993, the National Committee for Independent Political Action Steering Committee included Sheila Collins.

2011 YDS Winter Conference

On the weekend of March 18th-20th, 2011, the Young Democratic Socialists held their annual Winter outreach conference "Their Crisis, Our Pain: The Democratic Socialist Response to the Great Recession". Cornel West "will be the featured speaker on Saturday the 19th, and we will also host John Nichols, Bertha Lewis, Mark Engler, and Dan Cantor from the Working Families Party.

Other listed speakers included Komozi Woodard, Corey Walker, Fabricio Rodriguez, Christian Parenti, Stephanie Fairyington, Christine Kelly, Sheila Collins, Billy Wharton, Liz Shuler, Martin Weinstein, Michelle O'Brien, Skip Roberts, Joseph Schwartz.

Panels on race, the environment, organizing, and other topics will allow participants to learn from and communicate with fellow activists on some of the most important domestic and international issues. The event is perfect for both newcomers to Democratic Socialism/YDS, as well as activist veterans.
