Statement of Solidarity with Pace SDS
Five Students for a Democratic Society New York members were arrested at Pace University, New York, on Wednesday, November 15, 2006, during a “free expression” protest.
Movement for a Democratic Society issued a support statement;
- We the undersigned officers and members of Movement for a Democratic Society (MDS), denounce the actions of Pace University in regards to the planned arrest of several SDS first amendment activists on November 15, 2006 at the downtown campus. The targeting of these activists for their efforts to organize an SDS chapter at Pace is reprehensible. President David A. Caputo and the Pace administration have violated the civil rights of the student population and we join with SDS Pace in calling for David Caputo to step down now.

WHAT CITY OR NEIGHBORHOOD ARE YOU IN? Highland Park
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH DSA-LA? Intermittently since its founding and regularly since 2017 WHAT ABOUT DSA MADE YOU WANT TO JOIN? The explosive growth of membership since its endorsement of Bernie Sanders for President in 2016.
WHAT COMMITTEES, WORKING GROUPS, OR ACTIVITIES HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN WITHIN DSA-LA? TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE. I have occasionally attended meetings of the Climate Justice, Electoral Politics, Healthcare, Labor, Membership and Political Education committees. My attendance at monthly membership meetings have been fairly regular. I have been an organized Socialist since 1964 when I joined the now defunct Socialist Party - Social Democratic Federation and it's youth group, the Young Peoples Socialist League (YPSL). At the same time I was a member of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Peace Union (SPU). Subsequently I was a founding member of the American Socialist Organizing Committee (ASOC), the Camden Committee for Peace and Freedom, the Independent Socialist Clubs of America (ISCA) and the International Socialists (IS). In that period I was also briefly an intern for the Hat, Cap and Millinary Workers union and a member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). I was the branch organizer for the Camden Committee for Peace and Freedom, the Washington, D.C. Independent Socialist Club and the Central New Jersey International Socialists. At various points I have been a rank and file member of several different labor unions including the Office and Professional Workers, Teamsters, IUE, UAW, American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Education Association (NEA) and UNITE HERE. I was an Alternate Delegate to the Citizens Party National Convention in 1980. I was an active member of the Amherst, Massachusetts based Coordinating Committee for Peace and Democracy East and West. I participated in the First National Green Gathering in 1983 where I led a workshop on independent labor, human rights and peace movements in then Communist Eastern Europe and another on Nonviolence. I am a registered Green and I have run for public office three times on the Green Party ticket. I was a shop steward in UNITE HERE Local 54. I participated in Occupy Wall Street. I was briefly a member of the International Socialist Organization (ISO). I currently hold joint memberships in the Socialist Party USA and Solidarity as well as DSA and I am branch organizer of the Los Angeles branch of Solidarity.
