Team Up with Team Richmond

Team Up with Team Richmond October 7, 2018 Join us as East Bay Democratic Socialists of America and the Richmond Progressive Alliance team up to canvass for Jovanka Beckles, Team Richmond, and Yes on Prop 10: The Affordable Housing Act!

The day will begin with a rally at the Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA) headquarters, featuring Jovanka and Team Richmond candidates Melvin Willis, Eduardo Martinez, and Ada Recinos. We'll also hit the streets to talk to Richmond residents about passing Prop 10 and electing these progressive champions who will fight for people, not profit. Mail-in ballots will be released the next day, so this canvass will come at a critical turning point the campaign, and we need to hit as many doors as possible that weekend to build momentum for these corporate-free candidates!

Yes on Prop 10 is a ballot initiative that that will give us the power to adopt rent control necessary to address the state's housing affordability crisis by repealing the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, which upholds landlord interests, and — in tandem with the housing crisis — has deeply exacerbated social disparities, displaced longtime communities, driven homelessness, and dealt a blow to working-class power by making housing ever more insecure and inaccessible.

Jovanka Beckles is a proud democratic socialist and a two-term Richmond City Council member backed by the Richmond Progressive Alliance, a grassroots coalition that doesn't accept any corporate money. Team Richmond is a slate of candidates running for re-election to the Richmond City Council, including Melvin Willis for Mayor, and Eduardo Martinez and Ada Recinos for City Council. Together, Jovanka Beckles and Team Richmond have won countless victories for the city's working class, including a $15 minimum wage and more than $115 million in new taxes on Chevron and their oil refinery. Now, we want to send Jovanka Beckles to Sacramento to fight for policies like universal rent control and publicly-funded social housing, a Medicare-for-All system in California, and free public education from preschool to college. Jovanka Beckles and Team Richmond are also proponents of the Affordable Housing Act, and fighting alongside half a million renters across the state to pass Proposition 10 and pave the way for real rent control.[1]
