Mark Schmitt

Mark Schmitt is an author and blogger (his blog is The Decembrist). Before he joined the New America Foundation, he was the Director of Policy and Research at the Open Society Institute, and served for seven years in the U.S. Senate as a speechwriter and later as Policy Director for Sen. Bill Bradley. Schmitt was also a senior policy advisor on Bradley’s 2000 presidential campaign.

Schmitt serves on the boards of the Center for Policy Alternatives and the Proteus Fund.


Mark Schmitt was an identified member of JournoList - an email group of approximately 400 "progressive" and socialist journalists, academics and "new media" activists.

JournoList members reportedly coordinated their messages in favor of Barack Obama and the Democrats, and against Sarah Palin and the Republican Party. JournoList was founded in 2007 and was closed down in early 2010.[1]
