Young Democratic Socialists

In the early 1990s Kevin Pranis was Young Democratic Socialists organizer involved in the Prison Moratorium Project. [1]

In 1996 "Kevin Pranis comes to us from Minnesota by way of the University of Chicago, where he recently completed a B.A. in Latin American Studies and an M.A. in Social Sciences. Before taking the position of Youth Section Field Coordinator he was a caseworker for a public defender service in Harlem. He has also worked in various Latin American countries coordinating volunteer health care projects.

Pranis has three primary objectives as YS Field Coordinator: first, to improve internal education and communication; second, to s t r e n g t h e n ties with other progressive organizations; third, to work with YS members to develop a national activist campaign. He is currently working-with the help of interns Tara McDonnel and Andrew Fein-to prepare for three Youth Section events: a Socialist Summer Institute Quly 11-13), a YS Congress (Aug 24-26), and a progressive student convention {tentatively scheduled for October 12-14)". [2]

1997 National Conference

Columbus, Ohio was the location for DSA's 1997 National Convention.

DSA Youth Section Organizer Kevin Pranis and YS leader Raybblin Vargas plugged DSA's Prison Moratorium Project. The project, initiated by the YS and the NYC-based Urban Justice Center, targets state governments, calling for a five-year freeze on prison building and redirecting the funds to education and community investment.[3]

YDS convention

At the August 2002 18th Young Democratic Socialists Summer Institute and National Convention at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Kevin Pranis spoke on the Prison Moratorium Project and its current campaign against Lehman Brothers, a firm that underwrites bonds for private prisons.[4].

Justice Policy Institute

In 2007 Kevin Pranis was working[5]for the Justice Policy Institute.
