Christian Parenti is a correspondent for The Nation and is author of The Freedom: Shadows and Hallucinations in Occupied Iraq (2004), The Soft Cage: Surveillance in America from Slavery to the War on Terror (2003) and Lockdown America: Police and Prisons in the Age of Crisis (2000).

Parenti received his Ph.D. in sociology from the London School of Economics in 2000. He has been a Soros Senior Justice fellow and a Ford Foundation Fellow at the CUNY Graduate School's Center for Place, Culture and Politics.[1]

His father, Michael Parenti, is also a hardcore marxist activist and wrote for the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) theoretical journal Political Affairs among other CP publications. His communist affiliations were written up in the pioneering study book, "Covert Cadre" Inside the Institute for Policy Studies" by S. Steve Powel, Green Hill Publishers Inc., 1987, pp. 6, 7, 9, 26, 82, 151, 248, 264, 266, 328 & 333.

Center for Political Education

In 1999, Christian Parenti gave a talk entitled "Lockdown America: Police and Prisons in the Age of Crisis" The talk was sponsored by the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism linked organization, the Center for Political Education.[3]

Sacramento Marxist School

On Jan 18 2001 Christian Parenti lectured at the Sacramento Marxist School on Police and Prisons in the Age of Crisis.[4]

2006 YDS conference

The Young Democratic Socialists’ winter conference, cosponsored by the Columbia University Working Families Party chapter, was held February 17-19 2006, in New York City. It was entitled "Turning the Tide Towards Freedom: Building the Youth and Student Movement for Justice."

Speakers included Joseph Schwartz, Bill Fletcher, Jr., Christian Parenti, Gayatri Spivak, and Damu Smith, "who gave us the “big picture,” described and explained structural injustice at home and abroad, and got us fired up to continue and intensify the fight for a better world."[5]

2011 YDS Winter Conference

On the weekend of March 18th-20th, 2011, the Young Democratic Socialists held their annual Winter outreach conference "Their Crisis, Our Pain: The Democratic Socialist Response to the Great Recession". Cornel West "will be the featured speaker on Saturday the 19th, and we will also host John Nichols, Bertha Lewis, Mark Engler, and Dan Cantor from the Working Families Party.
