Resignation

Nuckolls resigned in February 2017;

To DSA friends and others not so friendly: I have received funding for a major comparative project in India and New Zealand, and will be out of the country for most of the rest of the year. Under the circumstances, therefore, I have decided to step down as chair of the Utah organizing committee and to follow John Sillito’s lead in resigning completely from the DSA. Mariko Frame will become chair in my place. I hope you will join me in wishing her every success.
I set up the organizing committee in 2015, appointed its members, and secured recognition from the DSA on the understanding that, when we were ready, we would apply for recognition as a state-wide chapter. Now I understand Ms. Svart, the DSA director, has explicitly rejected the notion of a state-wide chapter because it is insufficiently “bottom-up” in organization. But if that were true, then the National Political Committee should not have approved our application to become a state-wide organizing committee. To deny us formation as a state-wide chapter now is obviously contradictory, and a betrayal of our efforts, especially the efforts of the Utah executive committee. Now we will see the dissolution of our state-wide organization. Unless you live in Salt Lake City or Ogden, my friends, you will be out in the cold. Your only standing will be that of “member at large.” That is something we had always wanted to prevent, and why we viewed the organization of a state-wide chapter as absolutely essential.
Anyway, the future is up to you. As for me, I will devote what little time I have to the Wasatch Socialist Party.
In comradely solidarity, Charles W. Nuckolls Chair, Utah DSA.
