Dan Gallin, the General Secretary of the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco, and Allied Workers Associations wrote an article for the September/October 1996 issue of Democratic Socialists of America's newsletter Democratic Left, "Globalization & Its Discontents".
- At the global level, we must reconstitute a broad-based people's movement for a world-wide society based on satisfying human needs. Through consensus building on the basis of mutual respect, with all the sense of urgency that the situation imposes on us, but with all the patience that is required for securing lasting mutual commitments among independent equals, we must build coalitions. Only these can be the instruments of achieving justice, freedom and peace tor all.
