George Washington Battalion
The George Washington Battalion was a corps of United States volunteers. It was among one of seven International Brigades that fought during the Spanish Civil War. Its commander was the Yugoslavian-American, Mirko Markovic. The George Washington Battalion fought alongside the Abraham Lincoln Battalion at Brunete in July 1937 in a brutal battle that reared casualties as high as 50 percent. The following day, the two battalions had to merge.
